GIRLS STORIES:

Su Yu Xiang, age 14
Su Yu Xiang is in fifth grade. She was one of the few rural girls who spontaneously and immediately raised her hand when she was asked if she wanted to go to college. She lives with her father, Su Pei He, and her younger sister, Su Yu Luan who is nine years old. Like many other girls, her mother had died.

GGEF asked Su Pei He if he intends to keep his daughters in school. In unprecedented resolve, Su Pei He said, "I am Su Familydetermined to support them through college." Financial assets, however, do not back up such determination. Su Pei He was generous enough to show us his home, which had been in their family for seven generations. It was a two- room house with a concrete floor, a table, a few wooden chairs and a mat that served as the bed. A single light bulb dangled from the ceiling, lighting up the school awards of his two daughters. Though Su Pei He had attended school for five years, neither his wife nor the girls' grandmother had ever attended school.

GGEF is sponsoring Su Yu Xiang and her sister for the school year.
